MPKj councillors launch probe into possible graft

AT least four residents who are renovating their houses in Kajang have approached several councillors for help in dealing with runners demanding money from them.

The runners are believed to be acting on the behalf of certain individuals linked to the Kajang Municipal Council (MPKj).

Councillor Tan Han Kuo told a recent press conference that so far, he knew of two cases in Taman Seri Timah, one in Taman Megah and another case in Bandar Mahkota Cheras.

“The house owners were originally slapped with compounds for carrying out renovations without submitting building plans and obtaining the necessary approvals,” he said.

“Soon after the compounds were issued, the house owners were contacted by an anonymous caller saying he can help them settle the compounds for a sum of RM2,500 each. He said if they refused to comply, the compounds would be raised to five figures,” Tan said.

He said one house owner was also threatened that his house would be sealed.

The compounds issued vary from several hundred ringgit to several thousands, depending on the extent of work and technical assessment.

“We urge other house owners in a similar predicament to come forward with their complaints so more evidence can be gathered,” Tan said.

All complaints will be compiled and submitted to the MPKj audit committee for further action.

Also present at the press conference were councillors Lee Ah Seng and Tan Boon Wah and Bandar Mahkota Cheras Residents Association chairman Jacky Chan.
